After 3.5 hours of wading through a sea of walkers, geriatric elbows, and a thick cloud of Clinque perfume, I've just made it home from Expo '11. This is my third year attending. It's my annual birthday gift to myself - and quite a pricey one for a cheapskate like me after $8 to park, $10 at the door, and $2 to check my coat (a splurge), and that's before making a single tangible purchase, the first of which was a $2.50 small coffee. What a racket!

The heap of goodies I brought home from the expo. Deets & pics after the jump.

I got there as early as I could manage (had to finish my new bag first) so I could catch the 1:15 presentation by Valerie Mayen of Yellow Cake & Buzz & Growl. (Oh, and a lil TV show called Project Runway.) I missed the first few minutes, but caught most of it. Just like on TV, she was personable, funny, and adorable. I so envy her for being so comfortable in her own skin and at ease in front of a crowd. And her talent. I wouldn't mind a tablespoon or so of that either.

For me, the highlight of her talk was when she shared that she didn't use a sewing machine until 2006. That's 5 years ago! Only 4 years before she was on PR. Wow. She was 25 or 26 at the time, which really resonated with me since I was about that age when I began sewing circa 2001. (Yeah, if you do the math I'm about 6 years older than her & she has clearly lapped me in the get-up-and-go department, but that's not hard to do.) So, all those friends of mine who tell me they can't learn to sew because they weren't taught at mom's knee, shut the fuck up and get to it already, mkay? Times a wastin.

In past years I only purchased notions and tools at the expo, with the exception of some handmade felt last year. This year, all I bought was fabric. Lots of fabric. I had hoped to find some batiks or hand dyes with tonal gradations for use in a reverse applique technique I've been trying out. Here's a peek at my first such effort, Nice Pooper. (That's a story for another time!)

Nice Pooper, shown in Boys are Stupid, part of an anti-Valentine's Day show

So you can see why I wanted tonal gradations, yes? And I found what I was looking for! A few times over. Plus a bunch of fat quarters, which I've never bought before, and a few full & half yard cuts. Here's the haul:
(Aside: I HATE intentional misspellings under the guise of cuteness, as in "Kreations." It's not cute. It makes your shop look like a place to buy supplies for sewing KKK robes & hoods.) The stack on the left is faux batik, the first pack of related fabrics I came across that I found suitable for the applique process mentioned above. Kinda wish I'd held out because I found exactly what I had in mind later. Oh well. I couldn't resist the red & black stack of half yard cuts. I'm thinking aprons. The blue dots were giving me the stink eye when I put them down, so I had to buy them, right?

Each of the batiks in this stack are gradated from one edge to the other. The lighter toned strip is light end of the fabric, and it gradually intensifies across the piece. Nice! They are hand dyed by Color by Hand out of Newport, KY. On top is a bundle of five 10" square cuts of sateen, which I'm envisioning as a skin tone. The purple stack is 45% silk, 55% cotton and it is beautiful!
These beautiful Moda cottons were the best priced, most up-my-alley (for non-art quilt purposes), and highest quality cottons I pawed all day. At $6.99/yd, they were a great deal compared to the other vendors. (Extortion compared to my usual source, the thrift store!) These were purchased from Anna's Sewing Center in North Olmsted, OH. I was already super pleased with my purchase when the woman who rang me up handed me a 25% off coupon. Anna, I think I love you.
While this is not really news to me, per se, the sheer volume of clothing I have amassed over the years struck me as unusually... well... absurd. I've sold lots of it, but keep adding to the hoard, so any purging has been negated by further acquisitions. In short: I have GOT to get rid of this shit. But I love every single piece. At this pace, I'm headed straight for Hoarders. My poor, poor husband.
I don't know that these pics really capture the scale of this closet. It's located in an unfinished room above our garage, so it is the full width of a two-car garage and it's packed from wall-to-wall, not to mention the shelves filled with shoes, handbags, and boxed up bikinis and halters and hot pants and... sigh. Plus a big box of clothes in need of repair, and an even bigger box of clothing destined to be cut up and upcycled in the Stephie Lou Laboratory.

And I can't stop buying. I can't resist a good deal. It's in my DNA. Damn you, DNA!

So yesterday, as I searched for swap-worthy duds, I unearthed some of my most valuable treasures, bit the bullet, and put them on etsy. I'm going to force myself to list at least 5 garments a week. That shouldn't be too painful, right?
We're getting pounded with an insane 4-day snow storm that started Sunday night just as Mr L and I were leaving 1300/Third Gallery at 78th Street Studios. The gallery/studio proprietors were kind enough to invite my Wall Eye Gallery partner Linda and I, along with a handful of other talented artists and makers, to set up shop in their space for the weekend while Bazaar Bizarre was taking place elsewhere in the building.

The space is AMAZING. Ah. Mazing. I have total studio envy! See for yourself (more after the jump!):
I didn't have super high hopes for making tons of sales. It's been a slow season for me up to this point, and when I did BazBiz proper last year, I only came out $50 ahead after making back my $100+ table fee. Huge. Bummer. So, I thought this year it would be fun but not profitable. Saturday was living up to my low expectations until about 3:30, then all of the sudden I had several sales. What a relief! Sunday was the opposite - a bunch of sales early in the day, then nada. I think people got their running around done early because of the impending shit storm rolling in. Good call, people, good call. Over all, I'm thrilled with how well I did. What a relief.Stephanie Lipscombhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16296418246259130943noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5181826065029082693.post-85118219546995511472010-12-08T15:02:00.000-05:002010-12-08T15:05:21.831-05:00My first magazine submission! After being passed over for the Creative Workforce Fellowship a few weeks ago, I made a decision to *attempt* to be more of a go-getter and less of a nay-sayer when it comes to my creative business endeavors - my artwork, the gallery, my handbag/accessory line, etc. This blog is part of that effort. I've also been scouring the internet and the pages of magazines for CFEs, reader challenges, etc. So far I've applied for a scholarship to the Quilt Surface Design Symposium (thanks to Christine M. for hipping me to it), and yesterday I mailed off my first magazine submission. In both cases, I'm trying to keep a cautiously optimistic attitude. Who knows.
Here are my submission!

These were sent to Belle Armoire magazine for their "Hair Raising Accessories" challenge. I've been making yoyo/button pins and hair clips for a few months now. They are super quick and a fun way to use scraps and to paw through my massive vintage button stash. It actually takes longer for me to find the right button(s) than it does to make the yoyo. Here's an example of some of my previous yoyo goodies

When I saw this call for hair accessories, I decided to push it a little farther and submit, so I tried to cluster the yoyos together & put them on a headband. Didn't like the way it turned out with all three yoyos made from the same fabric & button, so I took them off the headband and tried again. I'm pretty happy with the result! At the last minute I decided to take the discarded yoyo cluster and make it into a clip.
Well they are all done and delivered! A day later than I'd hoped, but for me that's early. Really. I ended up with seven 5" square teeny tiny quilts. I guess that technically they aren't quilts because I didn't do the "correct" sandwich (top, batting, backing). I quilted the top with two layers of cotton batting, then used spray adhesive to stack those on top of a square of super duper stiff interfacing comparable to Peltex/Timtex (called, hilariously enough, Stiffy), and last but not least, white cotton. I bound it using packaged bias tape, of which I have a giant stash so I rarely bother cutting my own binding strips.
From one deadline to the next!

Next up: Working on a wholesale catalog for my handbags. Totally nerve wracking! What to include? How to price? How do I handle the fact that I use vintage fabrics, of which I have only in limited quantities. I need to have the catalog and price sheets delivered to my wholesale reps at Salty not Sweet by 12/20. Eeeeek! So today's goal is to make a sample of each item I plan to sell wholesale - well, start making them! Then I'll photograph them and take it from there. I am flying by the seat of my pants, as always.

I've also been invited by Carmen Navis and Ben Haehn to set up at their SuperElectric Press space at 78th Street Studios this coming weekend, 12/11 & 12/12. Bazaar Bizarre will be going on in the large event space at 78th St, so if you're hitting Baz Biz, be sure to seek us out! There will be lots of talented artists and makers in both spots, it'll be a great weekend. Lots of work ahead for me!

I've also got my Festivus artwork in its infant stages. Here's what's done so far
But, as my recently departed and sorely missed friend Stella would have reminded me, it beats the hell out of having nothing going on at all. Right now I'm working on some art for the upcoming Small Works show at Proximity Cleveland (where I've currently got two art quilts hanging), as well as the FESTIVUS show at Wall Eye Gallery (where I am one of seven co-owners). Here's a peek at what I've got going on so far.

So what the hell are you looking at, you might ask. You are looking at a vintage wig ad printed on an equally vintage silk scarf. I am a process junkie, and this is my first time using this process on this scale (having tried it only once before), and I must say that I'm quite pleased with myself as this is a method born of my own brain and not extensive googling.

I started with a sheer scarf that had water damage and was beginning to shatter in some spots, but I figured the irregularity would add a nice texture to the work. (Turned out not to make any difference at all in the finished product.) I ironed the scarf onto a piece of freezer paper cut to roughly 8.5" x 11". This stabilized the silk enough to go through the printer, in theory. I don't know if this is a universal thing, but my printer does not like anything thinner than regular printer paper, a lesson I've learned the hard way. So, I then used a glue stick to adhere the papery side of the freezer paper to a piece of scrap letter sized paper. After trimming the freezer paper and silk to the size of the paper, I fed it through my Epson inkjet printer. On the right side of the above image you can see the ghost image left on the freezer paper after I peeled off the scarf. I'm going to hang on to this for future process experiements (processperiments?) I've cut apart each cell of the ad and plan to use each in its own micro miniature quilt to be hung as a group but sold separately, the left side of the pic shows the background fabric I plan to use. Did I mention that I had hoped to deliver these to the gallery TOMORROW? We'll see...

Now to get all artsy fartsy intellectual-like and ramble on about what I'm trying to say in this piece, and my artwork in general. Many of the themes portrayed in my work relate to women's issues, primarily gender roles, standards of beauty, and domesticity. I am particularly interested in the relationship between artifice, femininity, and self image. Annnnnd.... add vanity to that list.

This wig ad really struck a chord with me. You can't see it in the pics here, but almost every wig advertised includes a tag line that emphasizes the importance of appearance and/or male attention. "Be attractive to men," "instant glamour," and my favorite, "instant love, instant success, new beauty in seconds." I loved that last one so much that I used it as the title of a piece I did in March that used the same source image. Here's a peek at that one.

For this one, I used completely different materials. The ad is inkjet printed on Lutradur treated with Golden Digital Ground. The Lutradur is somewhat translucent, but much more opaque than the silk scarf. The wild paisley printed stuff is vintage wallpaper. Our tiny 5' x 5' full bathroom was covered in this stuff - walls AND ceiling - when we bought our house, and the previous owner was kind enough to leave us the leftover roll. I had initially thought I'd use the wallpaper for the current series, but since the silk is so sheer, it obscured the printed image too much.

TTFN... Back to work!
Stephanie Lipscombhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16296418246259130943noreply@blogger.com0
